Are You Doing This Correctly? | Measuring in Motorsport [TECH TIP]

Measuring in Motorsport is critical in all areas of a cars construction, engine components need to be within tolerance to maintain performance and reliability and this also applies to the components we fabricate. Fabrication can offer a lot more freedom but we will need to use specific measuring devices from time to time when getting into the critical areas such as suspension mounting points.

Common measuring devices used in fabrication and pictured are the micrometer for precise outside measurements, telescopic bore gauge for quick and easy inside bore measurements that can then be verified by the micrometer, steel rules in 150mm or 6 inch, 300mm or 12 inch, vernier calipers which are used regularly for checking bar stock diameters and dimensions.

Just a word of warning with the digital vernier caliper, it should be checked at 0 before use to ensure that it hasn’t been reset to zero whilst slightly open effecting every measurement you make with the device.
